Excitement Brewing for My Upcoming Solo Guitar Album: “Sunday Brunch”

Dennis playing solo at Monks As a guitarist and music enthusiast, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey is sharing my music with others. On January 3, 2025, I’ll be releasing my newest solo guitar album, “Sunday Brunch,” and I couldn’t be more thrilled! This project is incredibly close to my heart, not only because of its unique concept but also because it encapsulates the joy and intimacy of live performances at various brunch gigs.

An Album Inspired by Brunch Culture

Brunch has a magical quality about it—it’s a time for gathering, relaxation, and savoring life’s simple pleasures. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of providing live music at numerous brunch events, creating soundtracks for moments of connection, laughter, and reflection. The album “Sunday Brunch” aims to capture that essence, delivering a mix of jazz standards, Latin tunes, blues classics, and heartfelt ballads, all interpreted through the intimate voice of solo guitar.

Each track on this album reflects a specific mood or memory from these live gigs. Whether it’s the upbeat energy of a bustling café or the tranquil ambiance of a quiet morning, “Sunday Brunch” invites listeners to experience the warmth and authenticity of live music.

Highlights

The album features 20 tracks, each offering a unique flavor and story. Here’s a closer look at some highlights:

1. Beautiful Love (05:15)

A jazz standard beloved by many, this tune sets the tone for the album. Its lyrical melody and lush harmonies evoke a sense of serenity and timeless beauty—perfect for easing into a relaxed morning vibe.

2. Afro Blue (05:42)

This classic by Mongo Santamaría is one of the standout tracks on the album. Its Afro-Cuban rhythm lends a vibrant, exotic flair, showcasing the versatility of solo guitar in expressing intricate percussion-inspired grooves.Dennis playing solo jazz guitar at hotel lounge

4. Sir Duke (04:35)

Paying homage to the legendary Duke Ellington, this Stevie Wonder classic radiates joy and celebration. Translating its soulful energy onto the guitar was a delightful challenge, and I hope listeners feel the same uplift that this song brings me every time I play it.

6. Yes or No (04:17)

Wayne Shorter’s “Yes or No” is a masterclass in modern jazz composition. This track is one of the more adventurous pieces on the album, with its unexpected twists and rhythmic complexity keeping listeners on their toes.

7. Sunday Brunch (05:56)

The title track is an original composition that embodies the spirit of the album. Drawing from my experiences performing at brunch gigs, it blends elements of jazz, blues, and folk into a piece that feels both reflective and celebratory.

10. Confirmation (05:18)

Charlie Parker’s bebop masterpiece is a thrilling inclusion on the album. Solo guitar arrangements of bebop tunes are notoriously challenging, but this track was a labor of love, and I’m proud of how it turned out.

13. Bolivia (04:59)

This composition by Cedar Walton is a dynamic exploration of rhythm and harmony. Its infectious energy makes it a joy to play, and it’s always a hit with audiences at live gigs.

15. Bridge Over Troubled Water (04:24)

18. Song Is You (04:56)

A tribute to the Great American Songbook, this Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II tune is a sophisticated yet heartfelt way to close out the album’s more traditional jazz offerings.

20. C Jam Blues (03:51)

Ending the album on a lighthearted note, this Duke Ellington classic is a celebration of improvisation and groove. It’s a tune that never fails to bring a smile to my face—and hopefully yours too!

Recording Live

What makes “Sunday Brunch” especially unique is that it was recorded live at various brunch gigs. Live recording adds an irreplaceable authenticity to the music. Every note, every nuance, and even the ambient sounds of the surroundings contribute to the listening experience.

Recording live also meant embracing the imperfections that come with performing in real-time. These “flaws,” however, are what make live music so special—they’re a testament to the spontaneity and genuine connection that can only be felt in the moment.

The Challenges and Rewards of a Solo Guitar Album

Performing solo on the guitar is both liberating and daunting. Without other instruments to provide support, the guitarist must take on the roles of melody, harmony, and rhythm simultaneously. Each track on this album demanded careful thought and creativity to ensure that every note had purpose and clarity.

Yet, the rewards of creating a solo guitar album are immense. It allowed me to fully express my musical voice and share my interpretations of these incredible pieces in the most intimate way possible.

Why This Album Matters to Me

“Sunday Brunch” isn’t just a collection of songs—it’s a reflection of my journey as a musician. ItDennis playing solo jazz guitar represents countless hours of practice, countless performances, and countless moments of joy shared with audiences.

This album is also a celebration of the simple yet profound pleasure of live music. In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, music has the power to bring us back to the present moment, to connect us with others, and to remind us of the beauty in the everyday.

The release of “Sunday Brunch” is just the beginning. I’m planning a series of live performances and events to promote the album, including some intimate brunch gigs where I’ll perform these tracks and share stories behind them. I’m also exploring the idea of hosting workshops on solo guitar performance, inspired by the techniques and arrangements featured on this album.
