Live Jazz At Turning Stone: A Melodic Experience

Nestled within the opulent ambiance of Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY, the TS Steakhouse serves not only exquisite dishes but also hosts an array of live jazz evenings that are a treat for both the palate and the soul. As a musician, I’ve had the delightful opportunity to perform at this prestigious venue twice so far, each time offering a unique musical experience tailored to the sophisticated atmosphere of the Steakhouse.

The Setting

The TS Steakhouse, located on the top floor of The Tower at Turning Stone Resort Casino, offers stunning 360-degree views, making it one of the most visually striking dining experiences in the area. The elegant decor, featuring a mix of red and black, creates a stylish, upscale environment reminiscent of high-end venues on the Las Vegas Strip. The restaurant includes a piano bar, a cigar and smoking lounge, and a seasonal outdoor balcony, enhancing its luxurious appeal.

Elegant Background Tunes

Our first engagement at the Steakhouse was a duo performance with an upright bassist. We focused on delivering smooth renditions of classic jazz standards, ensuring our music enhanced the dining experience without overpowering conversation. The melodic interplay between the bass and guitar created a soothing ambiance, perfect for the sophisticated setting.

Our second performance introduced a drummer into the mix, enriching the textural depth of our music while maintaining the appropriate ambiance.  Tracks like Charlie Parker’s “Segment,” which can be experienced in a duo format here, and “How High the Moon,” available for viewing here, were part of our repertoire.

Culinary Delights

The TS Steakhouse menu offers traditional steakhouse fare with upscale twists, such as Kurobuta pork chops, wagyu filet, and foie gras. Fresh seafood options include a seafood tower, day boat scallops, and miso sea bass. Vegetarian-friendly dishes, like the roasted beet and goat cheese salad and vegetarian meatloaf, cater to diverse dietary preferences. The culinary excellence of the Steakhouse is matched by its extensive wine list and impeccable service, making it a top choice for fine dining.

Trio Performances

Expanding our ensemble to a trio, we explored more dynamic arrangements, including lively versions of “Lady Be Good” and “Anthropology,” which can be heard here and here, respectively.  These performances delved deeper into the rich tapestry of jazz music, bringing a vibrant yet unobtrusive energy to the Steakhouse. The combination of classic jazz music, a talented lineup of musicians, and a venue that speaks volumes of elegance ensures that each performance is not just heard but truly experienced.

The Right Volume

One of the staff members praised our band for nailing the volume level. He mentioned how most bands that play at the venue blast it way too loud, but ours hit that sweet spot. Many clients over the years have expressed concern during the planning stages that we may be too loud or not loud enough. This is one of the reasons I find out ahead of time how many guests are coming and how the room we’ll be playing in is in terms of acoustics. Sometimes, if I haven’t been to a venue before, I’ll try to arrange a site visit to see and hear it before the event. This comment about the volume is one I thankfully hear a lot.

The positive reception to our jazz evenings at Turning Stone has been heartening, with many guests appreciating the music’s quality and the way it melds with the environment.
