Unplugged

In the realm of musical expression, there’s a special allure—an unfiltered connection that blossoms when the raw essence of sound takes center stage. Often, before “The Way Band plays a wedding reception, I find myself in a different role: embracing the cocktail hour with solo guitar and vocals. While not technically “unplugged,” the goal is to make it sound that way. While the high-energy dance repertoire with my band is exhilarating, these unplugged moments hold a special place in my heart.

Unplugged performances are a window into the unfiltered soul of music. They beckon with a raw and honest connection that transcends barriers and amplifies emotions. Without the layers of technology, the performer’s heart beats within the music, inviting listeners to share in the experience. When a solo guitar and voice intertwine, a symphony of simplicity emerges—a harmonious conversation where melody and lyrics dance together, striking chords within the hearts of the audience. With an extensive repertoire at my disposal, each unplugged set becomes a canvas of variety. What I like most about playing solo is that you have to do it all: lead vocals, backing vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, horn parts, string arrangements.  Really, you can’t do it all and you certainly can’t do it all at the same time, but you get to cherry pick the essential parts to carry the song.

One of the most gratifying compliments I receive is that I take familiar songs and breathe fresh life into them. This is a result of putting them in my optimal vocal key and the art of “cherry picking” the essential elements that best represent the heart of the song.
